The Joker was the final piece of my black and white series. Having produced and sold many black and white pieces I decided that I wanted to develop further by incorporating colour and switching things up stylistically. However, before I left the black and white series I wanted to end with a final piece that was contemporary, impactful and challenging to paint. I also wanted to make it meaningful and pay tribute to an artist that pursued the mastery of their craft.
Heath Ledger was a much loved actor who featured in many popular films including A Knights Tale and Broke Back Mountain. One of his greatest performances was in the movie The Dark Knight when he played Batman's nemesis The Joker. Unfortunately, Heath Ledger died on 22nd January 2008.
I had watched The Dark Knight a few times over the years but while I was considering what my last black and white painting should be I was up late one night and stumbled up on it while channel hopping. Watching Heath perform the role of The Joker that night demonstrated an inspiring level of commitment to his craft that I thought should be celebrated. As a result, I knew that I could pay a small tribute with my final piece of the series.
The painting was sold shortly afterwards and now resides in Paris, France.
